What is laser treatment for getting rid of cellulite?

Laser treatment is a fairly new method for treating cellulite. It was found that applying light and/or radiofrequency energy directly onto the subcutaneous fat could make it easier for the body to metabolize it.

This method has become more popular in recent years due to claims that it is a non-invasive treatment with little or no downtime.

There are two types of cellulite treatments: a quick procedure with multiple passes on targeted areas, or a single pass that can be used on larger areas.

How to treat cellulite with laser therapy?

Cellulite is a medical term for the lumpy bumpy orange-peel-looking fatty deposits which are often found on women's bodies. However, men can also develop cellulite, although this is less common.

Men's skin is thicker than women's skin, which means it is better equipped to deal with the pressure on the fat cells underneath. Thus, they are generally less likely to develop cellulite in areas such as their hips and thighs. Nevertheless, men who are very thin or bodybuilders may still get cellulite on their lower bodies.

The fat cells grow bigger and push between connective tissues, causing them to separate. Then it takes on wrinkled, uneven shapes that can cause structural problems for the skin. It may affect the hips, thighs, or buttocks. The fatty deposits can also be found on the back, arms, and even stomach.

Laser treatment is a non-surgical procedure that allows the removal of these unsightly blemishes as well as other problems such as age spots, spider veins, and stretch marks.

The laser energy is gradually transferred to the inner layers of skin and subcutaneous fat tissue, which encourages the body's cells to release their retained water. This water goes to the skin surface by evaporation. Thereby, cellulite's appearance is minimized as excess fluids are removed from beneath the skin, while new collagen is generated at a cellular level. The result is softer, smoother skin that looks much better.

The laser treatment helps the body to break down fatty deposits that are responsible for cellulite's appearance, while also increasing blood flow to the areas being treated. This will further reduce the amount of fat deposited in the area and result in a more evenly distributed fat layer within subcutaneous tissue; thus improving blood circulation. A good blood flow is important both for cellulite and the general appearance of skin: it nourishes and rejuvenates cells, which in turn reduces the formation of body fat and wrinkles.

The effectiveness of laser in cellulite treatment based on clinical trials

Most women have cellulite, especially around the thighs and buttocks. The prevalence of cellulite has led to numerous treatment attempts, including various topical solutions, massage-based therapies, and surgical techniques, most of which have sub-optimal clinical effects. However, more than 10 years ago, non-invasive treatment began to gain popularity. It includes laser treatment as well as radiofrequency and infrared light.

In the studies below, we look at these cellulite treatments and their effectiveness.

A study [1] was involving 57 patients who had visible signs of cellulite. They underwent a three-stage treatment with a 1440 nm laser. Six months after treatment, 90% of patients reported satisfaction with the treatment results.

In 2012, a study [2] was conducted on 16 patients with visible grade II and III cellulite. They received a single laser treatment with a wavelength of 1440 nm. The results showed more than 50% improvement in skin condition and overall appearance. No side effects have been reported.

The success of a system that combines radiofrequency (RF) and intense infrared light (IR) with mechanical massage to effectively treat cellulite is increasingly reported. The following studies were designed to evaluate the effectiveness of such a system.

A study [3] was involving 20 patients with cellulite. They were treated twice a week for 6 weeks with TriActive (low energy diode laser) on one side and VelaSmooth (a combination of two different electromagnetic energy ranges: infrared light and radiofrequency) on the other. The results showed impressive changes in hip circumference and overall skin condition for each device, and there was no significant difference between the two. However, it is worth noting that there was a significant increase in the incidence of bruising after treatment with VelaSmooth compared to TriActive.

The following study [4] included 10 patients who were recruited for 12 sessions of 30 minutes each, performed on one buttock, and the other one was used as an untreated control. The sessions were held twice a week. As a result, all patients noted an improvement in the condition of the treated buttocks. An enhancement in skin appearance was seen after the first session and persisted throughout the study.

The latest study [5] included 20 adult women with mild bilateral cellulite of the thighs and buttocks. They received 8 biweekly treatments with a radiofrequency/infrared combination massage device. 90% (18/20) of patients reported an overall clinical improvement. Side effects were limited to transient erythema in most patients, and bruising was observed in only 2 patients after the first two treatments. After a series of treatments, the clinical improvement was approximately 50%. The circumferential dimensions of the thigh have been reduced by 0.8 cm.

It can be concluded that laser treatment is an effective method to combat cellulite. The skin becomes smoother and more elastic. It is also worth noting the positive aspects of treatment sessions using combined radiofrequency radiation and infrared light, which also led to an improvement in the overall appearance of cellulite and skin condition.

Benefits of cellulite reduction with laser therapy

  • Non-ablative skin rejuvenation

One of the great benefits of laser therapy is its non-ablative properties. No matter what your skin color or how much melanin you naturally produce, laser therapy will not affect it. The frequencies used in a light spectrum targeted at a specific chromophore cannot absorb into your skin. You will notice a purifying effect on your body as it begins to release cellular wastes and toxins from beneath the surface of your skin.

  • Skin tightening and cellulite reduction

Laser treatment can increase the metabolic and circulatory function in the tissue and lymphatic drainage, which results in improved delivery of oxygen and nutrients to muscles and skin cells. This will result in a cellulite reduction and skin tightening.

  • Reduction of surgical procedures

Laser treatment is safer, less painful and it has a faster recovery time than traditional surgery for reducing cellulite, stretch marks.

  • Faster rehabilitation

When the laser is used for the reduction of cellulite, it is another important element, because after each session you can recover within minutes.

Alternative traditional surgery requires stitches which usually take about 2 weeks to be removed. During this time, you'll need to keep your scar covered and avoid heavy physical activity.

  • Less post-operative complications

Laser treatment is a well-established technique that has been used for years for this purpose. Also, no anesthesia is required during the process.

This treatment is external, without injections. The energy waves of the laser travel through the layers of skin and fat to reach the connective tissue (fibers that cause cellulite) underneath to act on them. In addition to fighting cellulite, this treatment also helps to improve blood circulation and increase collagen, which makes the skin elastic and resilient.

Since the treatments are not invasive, there is no recovery time and you can resume normal activities immediately after the treatment.

FAQ

🤔 Does laser treatment for cellulite work?

Yes, lasers can improve the appearance of cellulite by breaking up fatty deposits and stimulating collagen growth, leading to smoother skin.

🔍 How many sessions will I need to get rid of my cellulite?

That depends on how severe your cellulite condition is. The average fat reduction is about 30-40% per treatment session. So if you have bad cellulite on your buttocks, for example, it might take 5 sessions to significantly reduce the appearance of cellulite on that area.

⏳ How long will my results last?

Laser treatments stimulate collagen production in your skin. Collagen is a substance in your skin that gives it elasticity so when collagen levels are higher, you have better skin tone and texture. The collagen stimulation will last about 6-12 months before you need another treatment session.

📌 What about the risks and side effects of laser cellulite treatment?

Laser cellulite treatments are very safe. The most common side effect is mild bruising at the site but this usually heals within a week. Some patients report aching in the treated area for a few days after treatment, but this goes away quickly too.
