What causes a double chin?

Double chins are caused by many factors, including genetics, weight gain, and aging. When the skin around the neck loses its elasticity, it can sag and create a fold or bulge under the chin.

The most common causes of a double chin are:

  • Excess fat

It is the most common cause of a double chin and is usually the result of weight gain. Fatty deposits can accumulate in the neck and create a pouch under the chin. In addition, the skin around the neck may become less elastic and sag, contributing to the appearance of a double chin.

  • Aging skin

As you age, the skin around your neck begins to lose its elasticity. This can cause the skin to sag and create a double chin. More specifically, the loss of collagen and elastin in the skin can cause it to become thinner and less able to support itself.

  • Poor posture

Bad posture can lead to a double chin, as it causes the neck muscles to slacken. This makes the skin under the chin more visible and pronounced. Also, when you often look down at your phone or computer screen, the skin under your chin can become more pronounced.

  • Facial structure

Some people are more prone to developing a double chin due to their facial structure. For example, those with a long neck or a weak jawline are more likely to have a noticeable double chin. It is also more common in women than in men.

  • Smoking

Smoking can cause the skin to sag and contribute to the development of a double chin. This is because smoking reduces the amount of oxygen that reaches the skin, which can lead to tissue damage. In addition, nicotine can cause the blood vessels to constrict, which reduces blood flow to the skin.

  • Genetics

Some people are simply more prone to developing a double chin due to their genetics. If your parents or grandparents have a double chin, you are more likely to develop one too. In addition, certain ethnicities are more likely to have a double chin, including Asians and

Hispanics.

Chin fat removal treatments

Chin fat removal treatments

Chin fat removal treatments are popular among people who want to improve their appearance and confidence. There are many different types of treatments, but they all share the same goal: to remove excess fat from the chin and neck area.

Below, we will discuss the most popular chin fat removal treatments and how they work.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting for chin fat removal is a new treatment that can help contour the chin and neck area.

It is a non-invasive, FDA -approved treatment that uses controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate unwanted fat cells. CoolSculpting is safe for all skin types and can be used to improve the appearance of the chin, neck, and jowls.

CoolSculpting is a great alternative to surgery and offers a quick, easy way to achieve a more contoured appearance. Also, there is no downtime required after treatment, and results are typically seen within 2-4 months.

CoolSculpting

The science behind CoolSculpting

Cryolipolysis is a popular, well-tolerated nonsurgical procedure that uses controlled cooling to selectively destroy fat cells. Below we will check out the science behind CoolSculpting to explain the effectiveness of this treatment.

The study [1] included 15 patients with submental fat. They were treated using a non-invasive tissue cooling device (CoolSculpting system) for 30 to 45 minutes to induce submental fat reduction. Two treatments were performed 10 weeks apart. As a result, the average reduction in subcutaneous fat was 25%. Side effects were mild and completely disappeared within 10 weeks.

In the following study [2], 14 patients got a cryolipolysis procedure to reduce fat deposits in the neck and chin. A total of two treatments were done, each lasting 45 minutes, followed by up to 12 weeks of follow-up. As a result, an average fat layer reduction of 2.3 mm was demonstrated. 93% of patients were satisfied with the cryolipolysis procedure.

The next study [3] included 19 patients with chin fat. One side was treated for 60 minutes and the opposite side was treated for 35 minutes. As a result, ultrasound measurements showed an average reduction in the fat layer of 4.38 mm; when comparing the effectiveness of treatment with two applicators, no statistically significant difference was found.

The effectiveness of CoolSculpting has been proven in many clinical studies. Results show an average fat reduction of 20-25% in the treated area. Also, CoolSculpting is the only non-invasive fat reduction treatment that has been proven to cause natural cell death. This means that CoolSculpting not only reduces the fat cells in the treated area but also causes them to die off, resulting in a longer-lasting effect.

Smart lipo

Smart lipo is a minimally invasive laser-assisted lipolysis procedure that can be used for the removal of chin fat. The advantage of Smart lipo over traditional liposuction is that it can provide more precision and control during the fat removal process, resulting in less tissue damage and quicker recovery times.

Smart lipo can be performed under local anesthetic, and most patients report little or no discomfort during or after the procedure. The results are usually visible immediately, and full recovery usually takes around two weeks.

Is Smart lipo really the best type of chin fat removal? Keep reading to find more.

Smart lipo

The science behind Smart lipo

Laser lipolysis is a less invasive approach to neck rejuvenation than open surgery or liposuction. Wavelengths utilized for lipolysis liquefy fat and induce collagen remodeling, which tightens skin.

Below we will take a closer look at the science behind Smart lipo and consider study results that prove it is a safe and effective treatment for chin fat removal.

In a study [4], 57 patients with localized submental fat deposits and mild to moderate skin laxity were treated with laser liposuction using a wavelength of 1440 nm. As a result, skin laxity and fat reduction showed a significant improvement (34.6%) after 6 months of follow-up. The overall level of satisfaction was 97% of patients.

Another study [5] included 24 patients who received laser lipolysis of the submental and anterior cervical regions. Six months after treatment, 79% of patients showed significant improvement. Side effects were mild and disappeared during the treatment period.

Scientific studies have shown that smart lipo to remove fat from the chin is an effective procedure. The results are usually long-lasting and there is minimal downtime associated with the procedure. Also, recovery time is usually shorter than with traditional lipo because there is less tissue damage.

As you can see, the results are very dramatic and can really help to improve one’s appearance. Also, since the procedure is minimally invasive, there is typically very little downtime and patients can resume their normal activities within a few days.

Mesotherapy (Kybella)

Mesotherapy is an injectable treatment that can be used to target and remove fat from specific areas of the body, including the chin. Kybella is a type of mesotherapy that is specifically approved by the FDA for use in treating submental fullness, or “double chin”. Kybella injections break down fat cells, which are then eliminated from the body over time. Most people require a series of Kybella treatments for optimal results.

While Kybella is effective for treating chin fat, it is important to note that it is not a weight-loss treatment. In other words, if you are overweight or obese, Kybella will not help you lose weight. Kybella can only remove the fat cells that are already present in the treatment area. As such, it is most effective for people who have localized pockets of fat that they would like to target and remove.

Mesotherapy (Kybella)

The science behind mesotherapy

Mesotherapy has been used for decades for a variety of purposes, including fat removal. The basic premise behind mesotherapy is that by injecting a solution of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients into the target area, you can improve the health and appearance of the skin.

Below are some of the study that has been conducted on mesotherapy for fat removal.

In a study [6] 500 patients with excess fat in the chin area, received mesotherapy (ATX-101 2 mg/cm) or a placebo. Treatment continued for 12 weeks. Among patients treated with ATX-101, a positive result was achieved in 70% of participants. Also, the effectiveness was more than 8 times higher with mesotherapy than with placebo (46.3% vs. 5.3%).

In another study [7], 363 patients with moderate/severe chin fat were randomized to receive ATX-101 injections or a placebo. Four treatment sessions were carried out with an interval of a month and followed by a 12-week follow-up. As a result, patients who received mesotherapy improved their appearance by an average of 59.2% compared to 23.0% for placebo.

The last study [8] included 12 patients with submental fat deposits. They received from one to five sessions of mesotherapy treatment (phosphatidylcholine) with an interval between sessions of 2 weeks. As a result, a significant reduction in submental fat thickness was achieved after three treatment sessions. Adverse reactions were mild and transient and resolved 3–5 days after treatment.

Based on the research, it can be concluded that mesotherapy for removing fat from the chin and neck is an effective cosmetic treatment. The majority of the studies showed a significant reduction in fat in the treated area, with most patients reporting satisfaction with the results. There were few side effects reported, and these were typically mild and resolved quickly.

Which treatment is more effective?

Mesotherapy, CoolSculpting, and Smart lipo are all effective treatments for chin fat removal. However, the best treatment for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences.

💉 Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a natural product that breaks down dietary fat. Kybella is injected at several points into the problem area, and after the injection, the membranes of fat cells are destroyed, and the fat disappears forever.

🧊 CoolSculpting — among other techniques, this is the only non-invasive procedure. The treatment occurs by freezing and removing cells through a process known as cryolipolysis. It cools fat cells to about 39°F, causing ice crystals to form inside them. When they freeze, they destroy like with Kybella treatment.

📍 Smart lipo is a minimally invasive technique that uses vacuum suction to remove fat. This is a procedure that does not require stitches and has a short recovery period.

The similarity of these techniques lies in the fact that they permanently destroy fat cells. However, the results of Kybella and CoolSculpting are best seen about 3 months after the last treatment, while Smart lipo has an immediate effect. Also, the number of procedures is very different. Kybella has the most treatments (minimum 2-4), while CoolSculpting and Smart lipo only needs one treatment.

Based on user reviews, the most effective method for removing fat from the chin is CoolSculpting and Smart lipo. A single session can reduce neck fat by 20-25%, while with Kybella you can achieve a 10% reduction after six weeks and a 20% reduction throughout treatment.

If we consider the side effects — there are also differences.

Kybella: most of the patients had bruising, swelling as well as pain. These symptoms persist for 2-4 weeks.

CoolSculpting: side effects are very minimal and limited to the first few days. Patients may experience numbness after the procedure. Some noted pain and bruising.

Smart lipo: Since this procedure involves the use of local anesthesia and small incisions, no major complications or risks have been reported. Side effects include pain within a few days.

It can be summed up that Smart lipo is an ideal option if you are in a hurry and want instant results. However, it is also the most expensive treatment. If you need a more affordable and comfortable treatment, CoolSculpting is your option. Kybella may still be a good choice for someone with very high amounts of fat that may not fit in the CoolSculpting applicator.

Ways to prevent double chin in the future

Double chin is a common problem that many people suffer from. It is the excess fat below the chin that gives an individual a “double chin” appearance. Though it is not a serious medical condition, it can be quite embarrassing for people who have it.

There are various ways in which you can prevent a double chin from developing in the future. Some of the methods are listed below.

  • Healthy weight

The best way to prevent double chin is to maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight, then losing weight will help get rid of the excess fat under your chin. A healthy diet and regular exercise are the keys to maintaining a healthy weight.

  • Correct posture

Bad posture can also contribute to the development of a double chin. If you sit or stand with your head and neck bent forward, then you are more likely to develop a double chin. To avoid this, make sure to maintain good posture by keeping your head up and your back straight.

  • Stretching exercises

Stretching exercises can also help to prevent a double chin. These exercises help to tone the muscles in your neck and jaw, which can reduce the appearance of a double chin.

Ways to prevent double chin in the future
  • Avoid high-sodium foods

Eating high-sodium foods can cause water retention, which can make your face appear swollen and contribute to the development of a double chin. To avoid this, try to eat a healthy diet that is low in salt.

  • Drink plenty of water

Drinking plenty of water can help to reduce the appearance of a double chin. Water helps to flush out toxins from the body, which can make your face look puffier and contribute to the development of a double chin.

  • Sleep on a thin pillow

High pillows are the worst enemy of people with double chins because they stretch the skin, which leads to an increase in the double chin.

Summary

Double chin is a common problem that many people have to deal with. It can be an embarrassing issue, and it can also make you look older than you really are.

There are a number of ways that you can get rid of a double chin. One of the best ways is smart lipo. This is a minimally invasive procedure, and it can be done in just one session. If you want non-invasive options, you can try CoolSculpting but it will take longer to see results.

The choice of treatment will depend on the cause of your double chin and your personal preferences. The best way to find out which treatment is right for you is to consult with a specialist. They will be able to assess your situation and recommend the best course of action.
