What are broken capillaries?

Broken capillaries are tiny blood vessels that become enlarged and twisted under the skin. They are commonly found on the face (cheeks, nose, chin, and around the eyes) but can also occur in other areas of the body, for example, legs.

Broken capillaries may appear as red, purple, or bluish-purple lines or patches on the skin. While broken capillaries are generally harmless and pose no health risks, they can be unsightly and difficult to cover up with makeup. They can also cause pain, swelling, or itching in some cases.

What’s causing broken blood vessels?

Broken capillaries can be caused by various factors, from genetics to lifestyle habits. Common causes include:

  • Sun exposure

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can damage tiny blood vessels in the skin, leading to broken capillaries.

  • Genetics

Broken capillaries can be inherited from your parents. If you have a family history of rosacea or other conditions that cause broken capillaries, you may be more likely to develop them.

Genetics
  • Age

As we age, our skin loses some of its elasticity and becomes thinner, making it more prone to damaged blood vessels.

  • Rosacea

This chronic skin condition increases inflammation in the skin and can cause visible broken capillaries. Also, people with rosacea tend to flush or blush more easily, which can lead to permanently broken blood vessels.

If you are experiencing rosacea, look into laser treatment, which can reduce redness, flushing, and visible blood vessels on the face. Read our article to learn more.
  • Skincare products

Some ingredients, such as retinoids and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), can irritate the skin, leading to broken blood vessels. Facial treatments such as chemical peels and dermabrasion can also damage tiny capillaries.

Regardless of the cause, broken blood vessels can be effectively treated with a variety of light therapy devices and other treatments, such as serums and creams.

How red light therapy can help with broken capillaries

Red light therapy is an effective, non-invasive method of reducing and treating broken capillaries.

The red light increases blood circulation in the treatment area while simultaneously decreasing inflammation, which can reduce or eliminate the appearance of broken capillaries. Additionally, it works to tighten and strengthen the walls of blood vessels to prevent future capillary damage.

Red light therapy is generally pain-free and produces no harmful side effects, making it a safe, effective treatment option for burst blood vessels. But it’s important to note that results may vary depending on the severity of the affected area. However, with consistent use over time, red light therapy can have lasting beneficial effects on the appearance.

Effectiveness of red light therapy for the treatment of broken capillaries

Red light therapy is being increasingly studied to determine its effectiveness in the treatment of broken capillaries and telangiectasia (skin vascular lesions). Below are some of the results of recent research.

Facial telangiectasias are one of the most common cutaneous vascular lesions characterized by cutaneous vasodilatation. The study [1] has been conducted on the efficacy and safety of red light (595 nm) with intense pulsed light (IPL) at three different wavelengths in the treatment of facial telangiectasias. A total of 160 patients were enrolled and treated from 2017 to 2019. They received two sessions of one of four treatment options: red light (595 nm), and IPL with different wavelengths (530–650 nm; 560–1200 nm; 590–1200 nm).

As a result, patients in all four groups showed an overall and significant improvement in facial telangiectasia after treatment compared with baseline. In addition, red light (595 nm) and IPL procedures with 530–650 nm have shown the best results.

The following study [2] examined the effectiveness of treating facial redness due to capillary ruptures using a pulsed dye laser (PDL) with a wavelength of 595 nm and an intense pulsed laser. The right and left sides of the face were randomly assigned to each type of treatment. There were two sessions with an interval of 4 weeks.

As a result, an average improvement of 60% was demonstrated in the IPL-treated segment compared to 45% in the other segment. The level of pain was described as moderate, and the procedure was well tolerated with both treatments.

The next study [3] examined the treatment of melasma (skin pigmentation disorder). Doctors suggest that the occurrence of this disease may have a vascular component. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of light therapy (red light at a wavelength of 595 nm in combination with a fractional low-power diode laser (FDL) with 1927 nm) to treat damaged capillaries that can provoke the development of melasma.

The examined patients included 10 women and 1 man who underwent a series of procedures (four on average) approximately 4-6 weeks apart. As a result, six of eleven patients (54%) showed a significant (more than 50%) improvement in symptoms.

The last study [4] examined the treatment of spider veins on the legs with light therapy from 585 to 600 nm. Ten women were selected with blue or red linear spider veins less than 1.5 mm in diameter. The treatment was carried out using a pulsed laser; a total of 3 procedures were performed on each side at intervals of 6 weeks. As a result, more than three-quarters of the capillaries were cleared after treatments. Side effects were minimal, and the treatment was well tolerated.

How to prevent pop blood vessels on the face

To prevent pop blood vessels, it is important to take steps to protect your skin. Here are some tips for avoiding broken capillaries:

  • Avoid harsh soaps and facial cleansers

Harsh soaps can strip away the natural oils that help keep your skin moist, making it more prone to irritation and inflammation, which can cause pop blood vessels. Choose gentle, hydrating cleansers instead.

  • Wear sunscreen daily

UV rays can cause inflammation, which can lead to broken capillaries. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 daily to protect your skin from sun damage.

  • Don’t scrub your face

Scrubbing the skin too hard can make it more prone to breaking, so use a gentle cleanser and pat dry instead of harshly rubbing with a towel. Also, if you have acne or other skin issues, use products that are specifically designed for your skin type.

Broken capillaries on face
  • Avoid extreme temperatures

Too much heat or cold can cause inflammation, which can lead to pop blood vessels. Avoid taking scalding hot showers and limit your exposure to icy temperatures, such as swimming in cold water.

  • Use gentle skincare products

Avoid using harsh exfoliators and chemical peels, as these can damage the delicate capillaries beneath the surface of the skin. Instead, opt for natural ingredients like plant oils and extracts that won’t strip the skin of its natural oils.

  • Eat a healthy diet

Eating a balanced diet can help your skin stay healthy. Foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish and nuts, can be beneficial for keeping your skin hydrated and helping to prevent broken capillaries.

Following these tips can help prevent pop blood vessels on the face, as well as other skin issues. Taking care of your skin is important for healthy-looking skin and a more youthful appearance. So, be sure to make skin care part of your daily routine.

Summary

Nowadays, broken capillaries on the face are a common concern for many, including people of all ages. Broken capillaries can be caused by a variety of factors, such as exposure to environmental elements and sun damage, or even from genetics or hormonal changes. Fortunately, there is a solution you can take in order to help reduce the appearance and visibility of broken capillaries on the face.

Red light therapy is a great option for those looking to improve their appearance. This type of therapy uses low-level light energy to target and reduce the redness, resulting in a more even skin tone. It can also help improve circulation and boost collagen production, which helps promote healthier and brighter-looking skin.

So, if you’re looking for a natural and non-invasive way to reduce the appearance of broken capillaries on your face, red light therapy is definitely worth considering. With regular sessions, you can start to see visible improvements in the look and feel of your skin without any pain or downtime.
